Katell Thielemann is the director of platform logistics for Honeywell Technology Solutions Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International.

Q: Tell me a little about Honeywell Technology Solutions’ background and the relationship with the Department of Defense.

A: Honeywell is a $37 billion, diversified and global technology and services leader. The company is widely recognized as a defense industry standard for its comprehensive life cycle management programs and performance- based logistics. We have partnered with DoD and across the military services for over 50 years. Around the world and across the military services, Honeywell people and technologies are supporting DoD to be mission-ready.

Q: What are some examples of how you have partnered with DoD?

A: The company has many successful partnerships across service branches, platforms and depots. For over 20 years, Honeywell has served the Marine Corps to manage more than $3 billion in mission-critical assets. These logistics services support the Maritime Prepositioning Ships Program, the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway and operational logistics support to engaged Marine Corps and DoD operating forces.

In other programs, Honeywell is helping the Air Force efficiently manage and service the B-2, C-130 and ground power equipment fleets at Ogden Air Logistics Center. It also supports the Army to produce durability and reliability improvements on critical systems such as the M1A1, and the CH-47, UH-60 and AH-64. Honeywell provides total package fielding for virtually every tactical vehicle in the Army’s fleet, and supports over $53 billion in property books for the DoD. With over 500 dedicated employees deployed in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan, we help keep soldiers supplied and equipment running.

Q: What does Honeywell see in trends for public/private partnerships in logistics?

A: The trend for public/private partnerships in defense logistics is accelerating upward. These partnerships clearly boost readiness with services for revitalization, pre-positioning and materiel and depot management. At depots in theater and in country, companies such as Honeywell are creating a new paradigm for how civilian companies can extend our military’s reach and effectiveness. Meeting the challenges facing modern defense organizations is a team effort. At depots like those at Anniston and Ogden, Honeywell partnerships are improving asset performance while reducing operational costs.

Q: Is there a Honeywell success model for logistics programs?

A: Partnering with Honeywell has been demonstrated to provide a path for extending asset service life, and increasing availability for mission-critical components. Over the last 10 years, multiple branches of the military have recognized tremendous challenges with declining material availability rates, declining component availability, and growing obsolescence. Our defense logistics programs address these challenges through supply chain and inventory management standardization, increased demand planning and asset visibility, condition-based equipment maintenance, field service engineering, and pre-positioning logistics.

The Honeywell Operating System [HOS] is a comprehensive, integrated business approach to drive sustained exceptional performance in safety, quality, cost, inventory, delivery and supply chain responsiveness. HOS combines our Six Sigma and Lean culture with our velocity product development techniques, and is geared toward fixing processes, standardizing work, speeding operational performance, and producing big improvements in quality and delivery.

Honeywell’s Defense Logistics and Services operating tempo is tremendous. It proceeds from a systems and life cycle management perspective. It integrates and standardizes processes, uses advanced repair technologies, and defines success in pre-defined outcomes. The goal is to extend service life of missioncritical assets through Honeywell’s Mission Ready deployment model. In a successfully integrated logistics program, Honeywell’s logistics and services support model can compound value in support, readiness, operations and cost.

Honeywell’s Mission Ready logistics and services support model includes OEM-quality parts, Honeywell Operating System processes, predictive and condition-based maintenance technologies, supply chain standardization, and personnel commitment to shared common goals. Our experience is that this model, implemented through partnerships, extends service life for critical assets, reduces maintenance costs, and produces savings with improved asset availability and on-time, direct-to-destination deliveries.

Q: What new programs are you working on in partnership with DoD?

A: Honeywell is in a position to bring a breadth of service offerings. Today’s aging fleets, frequent missions and harsh environments create a complex support challenge, and we have responded. Acquisitions of Dimensions International Inc. and Intelligent Automation Corp. have strengthened our global footprint; and our capabilities in expeditionary logistics and condition-based maintenance are now expanded—enabling greater operational savings.

As I mentioned, we already have multiple strong and successful partnerships with a number of military depots. We are expanding these relationships to create more value for our customers. Honeywell has multiple commercially proven solutions that we can leverage in support of improved efficiencies and technology insertions. These provide improved safety, energy savings, asset maintenance or management cost savings. In an environment as dynamic and essential as the security of our nation and our allies, the challenges are many; but these can be overcome through close collaboration between DoD and industry leaders like Honeywell. ♦
