A Regular Feature of Logistics News and Information Directly from PEO EIS

April Conference to Advance Army Mobility Systems Collaboration

Product Manager Transportation Information Systems (PM TIS) is reaching out to other Army organizations to promote efficiencies among transportation and information resources. In 2009, PM TIS established collaborative relationships with two other PEO EIS PM offices, Joint–Automatic Identification Technology (J-AIT) and Movement Tracking System (MTS) as well as Battle Command Sustainment Support System (BCS3), which is part of PEO Command, Control and Communications Tactical.

The efforts will culminate April 6-7, when PM TIS will host an Army Mobility Systems Conference in Newport News, Va. The meeting provides a venue for stakeholders, customers, end-users and vendors of these four organizations to collaborate on connectivity and commonalities. PM shops will provide demonstrations to illustrate the synergy created when these products and systems are used together. The conference also will include program and technology updates.

PM TIS enables warfighters to plan, coordinate, manage and track cargo and personnel movements from strategic to tactical levels, from depot to foxhole. Working collaboratively with the other organizations, PM TIS extends the impact of its capabilities by providing enhanced products that take into consideration other aspects of the warfighter’s needs.

PM J-AIT provides global asset tracking, Web-based radio frequency in-transit visibility services, and complete program life cycle support. PM TIS is working with PM J-AIT to leverage the TIS Globe capability that will provide Transportation Coordinators’– Automated Information for Movements System II users the ability to see all interrogator locations as they plan convoy movements.

PM MTS enables vehicle-based combat service support soldiers to communicate in real time with each other and with their control stations, allowing them to send and receive instant messages and track a vehicle’s exact location. This system improves communication and provides complete in-transit visibility of logistics assets. PM TIS is working with MTS to create efficiencies of data usage and display of data on the PM TIS enhanced mapping capability.

PM BCS3 enables warfighters to target, access, scale and tailor critical logistics information. Working with PM TIS, both systems ensure system collaboration, information sharing and operations on secure and nonsecure Army networks to support deployment and distribution management operations.

GCSS-Army Continues Preparations for Operational Assessment

Global Combat Support System–Army (GCSS-Army) continues preparations to expand its tactical logistics system at the National Training Center (NTC) in California this summer, where release 1.0 of the system is currently in use. Plans continue for an operational assessment of release 1.1, which will add unit supply, property accountability, ground maintenance and limited financial functions for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Irwin.

The project is currently in the design/ build phase. The PM GCSS-Army team has held several site preparation visits at Fort Irwin to help the 11th ACR prepare for the major changes that are coming with the release. Additional site surveys are planned for the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

Training is underway and will continue throughout the preparation period. A lead user program will educate and train selected GCSS-Army users in each of the 11th ACR’s subordinate units, who will then help train other users in May. The PM GCSS-Army Website will feature training in advance of the Instructor Facilitated New Equipment Training. The team has held several information exchange and educational events at the NTC during the site surveys to ensure the maximum number of NTC personnel impacted by the GCSS-Army Operational Assessment know well in advance what changes to expect. The GCSS-Army Website was recently revised and improved to make it a primary source of information for NTC personnel to learn about the system and upcoming events.
